Quality, Loving Care for Small Mammals

What Do I Do If I Found An Animal In Need?

Quality, Loving Care for Small Mammals

Every animal that comes through my door receives the highest level of care I can provide. This includes fresh produce, high-quality formulas designed for each species, regular veterinary check-ins, and compassionate care around the clock for each little critter!

What Animals We Accept

What Do I Do If I Found An Animal In Need?

Quality, Loving Care for Small Mammals

I take in Eastern Cottontail Rabbits of all ages, as well as squirrels, eyes-open baby or juvenile opossums, and adult opossums. Other small mammals may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on my capacity limits and other factors.

Unfortunately, I cannot take in birds or rabies vector species such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, fishers, and bats. However, I may be able to assist with temporary triage and transport to a rehabilitator who specializes in these species, depending on my current space and availability.

If you have found any of these animals and my voicemail indicates that I am not taking them at this time, please visit the NC Wildlife website for a map of wildlife rehabilitators who can provide assistance, or contact your local animal control or wildlife officer!

What Do I Do If I Found An Animal In Need?

First things first, do NOT give wildlife anything to eat or drink!!! That will do more harm than good. We don't see EMTs handing out cheeseburgers to people who are in rough shape, so we don't want to do that to our local wildlife! Even if they look hungry or thirsty, do not give them a thing! Wildlife rehabbers can address issues of hunger and thirst, but we can't often fix the damage caused by improper feeding! If it is safe to pick up the animal (consult a wildlife rehabber or animal control officer first!), always wear gloves and place the animal in a safe box with air holes or a pet carrier, and leave them be until they can be transported for care! Meet the Rehabber!

Hello! I'm Jess, the founder of Salem Wildlife Rescue and a licensed wildlife rehabilitator based in North Carolina. Salem Wildlife Rescue operates from my home in West End, NC. My lifelong passion for animals drives me to make a positive impact, and while saving one animal may not change the world, it certainly transforms the world for that individual creature.

Although Salem Wildlife Rescue originated in Salem, MA, we relocated to West End, NC in October 2025.

A bit about me: I manage this rescue alongside my full-time job since wildlife rehabilitation isn't financially rewarding. I previously volunteered as an educator with Zoo New England. At home, I have two beloved cats, Zephyre and Maya! When I'm not busy rehabilitating wildlife or working, I enjoy expanding my knowledge through classes, embarking on little adventures, listening to true crime podcasts, or taking leisurely strolls through IKEA. With a big, compassionate heart, I care deeply for every animal that comes through my door, regardless of how long they stay with me. If you choose to bring an animal to Salem Wildlife Rescue, you can trust that it will receive the best and most loving care possible!
